Fort Worth, Texas, native Leon Bridges will be performing in Sydney next month, but don’t bother trying to buy tickets – they sold out within moments of going on sale.
Bridges’ rise has been nothing short of meteoric. Just two years ago, he was playing open-mic nights and washing dishes at Del Frisco’s Grille in Forth Worth.
After signing with Columbia Records in December 2014, he began touring across the USA and Europe, and appearing on shows such as Saturday Night Live and the Tonight Show. The rest, as they say, is history.
Despite his newfound celebrity, Leon continues to call Fort Worth home, and if you’re visiting the city, you just might bump into him at a range of restaurants, bars and music venues – when he isn’t touring, of course.
To improve your chances, we asked Bridges’ band mate, saxophonist Jeff Dazey, to reveal where he and the 26-year-old celebrity hang out.
According to Jeff, Leon often eats at one of Fort Worth’s most famous diners, the Ol’ South Pancake House
. The young muso can also sometimes be seen eating at his old workplace, Del Frisco’s Grille
Admitted jazzophiles, Jeff and Leon regularly frequent the Scat Jazz Lounge
. Many of Leon’s other favourite music venues (Lola’s Saloon
, The Grotto
, and Magnolia Motor Lounge
) gave him his first performance opportunities. And he and Jeff are excited to see what Lola’s new Trail Park expansion will offer the local music scene.
The Boiled Owl Tavern
is another popular destination for Leon and his band mates. The low-key bar regularly hosts local and regional acts.
Nearby, The Chat Room Pub
, a pet-friendly watering hole, is a favourite place for Leon and his friends to end the night. The bar is open late, pours low-cost drinks and always draws an eclectic crowd.
All of the spots Leon visits played a role in his formative years, offering him a spot on a stage or a comfortable place to grab a drink or bite to eat and chat with friends.
You can follow in Leon’s footsteps by visiting any of these local businesses, and who knows, you may even get a selfie moment with the star himself.
